Jeep Wrangler Generations

The original "Jeep" as it came to be known was the Willys MB, a military reconnaissance vehicle that saw widespread use throughout the second World War. Additional models of the Jeep followed after, but the Wrangler model would not come until 1986. Since then the Jeep Wrangler has become one of the most popular off-road capable vehicles on the market. Below we highlight the differences between all of the Jeep Wrangler generations, which you can shop for today at AutoNation USA!

Wrangler YJ (1986-1996)

1986 saw the introduction of the first Jeep Wrangler, also known as the YJ. Although similar to the Jeep CJ, the Wrangler was an all-new design, featuring more comfort features to make it better suited for on-road driving, while maintaining its off-road capabilities. All YJ Wranglers came with two doors and a soft-top as standard equipment.

Wrangler TJ (1997-2006)

Moving forward to 1997, Jeep decided to return to rounded headlights, a throwback to the classic Jeep models. This update was so popular that the rounded headlights continue to this day! The TJ chassis also brought an all-new suspension, a big improvement of the aging leaf-spring style found on the YJ. Like the previous generation, this new Wrangler TJ was exclusively offered with two doors.

Wrangler JK (2007-2017)

The Wrangler JK was one of the most drastic updates to the Jeep Wrangler platform, introducing an all-new four-door model, a first for the Jeep. These were called "Unlimited" and quickly became the most popular version of the Wrangler. Along with this, the JK brought new power windows and locks, available navigation systems, and interior improvements throughout.

Wrangler JL (2018-Present)

One of the most recent updates to the Jeep Wrangler platform came for the 2018 model year with the Wrangler JL, adding new powertrain options, a more efficient transmission, backup cameras as standard, and a much improved interior, bringing it more in line with modern SUVs. This would also be the first Wrangler to be offered with an electric drivetrain, known as the Jeep Wrangler 4xe.

Jeep Wrangler Trim Levels

In addition to four generations of Jeep and two unique body styles, the Jeep Wrangler has seen a wide variety of available trim levels over the years. From entry level options like the Wrangler Sport to the top-of-the-line Wrangler High Altitude, we've listed out some of our favorites. Learn more below then shop by trim level for your perfect used Jeep Wrangler.

Jeep Wrangler Sport

The Wrangler Sport is the entry-level trim, coming in both 2-door and 4-door variants. These are most often equipped with smaller engines, but V6 options are available, too. Expect to find soft tops as standard, a basic 4x4 drivetrain, and on newer model years you find features like backup cameras and Apple CarPlay as standard.

Jeep Wrangler Willys

The Wrangler Wills is a step up from the base Sport trim, and is a callback to the original Willys Jeep from the 1940's. In addition to standard Sport features, the Willys features off-road tires, water-resistant floor mats, improved shocks and brakes, rock rails, as well as exclusive Willys decals and badges to denote this special trim level.

Jeep Wrangler Sahara

The Jeep Wrangler Sahara is one of the most popular trim levels, offering enhanced features and options, all at an affordable price point. In addition to standard Sport features, expect to find enhanced 4x4 systems, skid plates front and rear, larger wheels and tires, side steps, and body-colored exterior accents.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon is one of the best options for off-road enthusiasts, being named for the infamous Rubicon trail. Expect to find locking differentials, large off-road tires, improved 4x4 systems, more powerful engine options, heavy-duty axles, skid plates throughout the underside, and exclusive badging.

Jeep Wrangler High Altitude

For those looking for a top-of-the-line experience, look no further than the Jeep Wrangler High Altitude. This new trim level features all of the great features of the Sahara, along with larger wheels, leather-trimmed seats, premium audio systems, and enhanced safety features as standard.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Now although the Unlimited term is not necessarily a trim level, it is nonetheless a popular version of the Jeep Wrangler, starting with the JK and JL generations. Simply put, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is the four-door version, and has quickly become the most popular variant on the market.
