Ford F-150 Generations

The Ford F-Series was first introduced in the 1940s and has seen significant changes over the last 70+ years. There have since been fourteen distinct generations of Ford F-Series, each better than the previous. Below we've highlighted some of the most popular generations of Ford F-150, which you can shop for right here at AutoNation USA!

2004 was the start of the eleventh generation of the Ford F-150, bringing a significant redesign and an all-new chassis. Improved suspension geometry resulted in a smoother ride, and a new 4WD system was introduced, too. The 11th generation was also the first time every F-150 came with four doors, including standard and SuperCrew cabs.

Moving forward to 2009, Ford returned to the standard door count for its standard and SuperCrew cabs, equipping two and four doors, respectively. Like previous generations, this received a sharp new exterior look and interior updates. The 12th generation also marked the first time a Ford F-150 would be offered with a Ford EcoBoost engine, this time a powerful twin-turbo V6. This body style would continue through 2014, and you still see many on the road today.

Although extensive, the following generation updates didn't do as much to the exterior looks as it did the composition of the F-150. To help cut weight and increase fuel economy, the exterior bodywork was changed from steel to aluminum, saving nearly 1000lbs over its predecessor. A smaller EcoBoost was introduced, alongside a new 10-speed automatic, all in the name of increased efficiency.

One of the most recent updates to the Ford F-150 came in the 2021 model year, adding new powertrain options and dropping the inefficient 6-speed automatic transmissions, opting for the better-equipped 10-speeds as standard. A hybrid-electric called the PowerBoost marked the intro of the first hybrid drivetrain in an F-150, and the F-150 Lightning returned as a fully-electric vehicle, Ford's first mass-produced BEV truck.
